Tottenham suffer double injury blow ahead of Barcelona clash

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino hinted that he could be without Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele against Barcelona in Wednesday’s Champions League clash.
In Tottenham’s win over Huddersfield Town, Vertonghen and Dembele were both substituted at half-time.  Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks were brought on for the injured pair, with Eric Dier replacing Vertonghen at the back.
Vertonghen is believed to have suffered hamstring injury that he picked up just 15 minutes into the game. Dembele received a knock that will be looked at before a decision is made on his availability.
The duo are now major doubts for their upcoming midweek fixture and aren’t the only ones Pochettino could be without. Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have hamstring and abdominal injuries and could be absent in midweek.
As per Sky Sports, the Spurs boss said: “We need to assess tomorrow and after tomorrow both (Vertonghen and Dembele). We’ll see what happens but for now it’s impossible to say anything.”
With four key players potentially out for Tottenham’s clash with Barca, Pochettino’s men could be in trouble. They lost their group stage opener to Inter Milan and can’t afford to drop more points if they want to progress to the knockouts.
After failing to make a permanent signing in the summer, Spurs’ squad will be stretched thin on account of their injury woes of late, forcing the manager into changes and limiting his options.

Better than Pogba and Martial – West Ham favourite embarrasses Manchester United duo on Saturday

Better than Pogba and Martial – West Ham favourite embarrasses Manchester United duo on Saturday – originally posted on Sportslens.com

West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble impressed in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United and embarrassed two of his opponents in the process. As per WhoScored, the Hammers legend (one chance created, one assist made) was better than Paul Pogba (zero chances created) and Anthony Martial (zero chances created) – two players who were hooked off by manager Jose Mourinho due to their poor performances.
It was West Ham’s second win of the season and saw them go 13th in the Premier League with seven points from as many games, just three points adrift of Manchester United. Noble out-performing Pogba and Martial will certainly irk Mourinho, but the overall performance of the side was to blame for the outcome.
United’s starting eleven was intriguing with Scott McTominay operate at the heart of the backline and Maurouane Fellaini in midfield. West Ham capitalised on the weaker opposition and Noble was at the heart of everything good. He made three tackles, more than Pogba, Fellaini and Matic combined, and made more passes (67) than any of his teammates. Noble was also adept at turning defence into attack, completing nine of 13 long balls attempted.
It’s also worth noting that only Matic made more touches (103) than Noble (81) on Saturday afternoon, highlighting how much influence he had at the London Stadium – a performance manager Manuel Pellegrini could be proud of.

Tottenham suffer injury blow ahead of Huddersfield clash, doubt for Barcelona meeting

Tottenham suffer injury blow ahead of Huddersfield clash, doubt for Barcelona meeting – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered an injury blow ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Premier League clash with Huddersfield Town, with Dele Alli having aggravated a hamstring problem, report the Telegraph.
His latest injury setback could also see him miss Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Barcelona and puts him in doubt of representing England in the Nations League on October 12 and October 15.
The initial problem for Alli came in an England shirt against Spain earlier this month, forcing him to miss games against Liverpool in the Premier League and Inter Milan in the Champions League – both matches Tottenham lost.
He returned last week against Brighton & Hove Albion and scored against Watford in Wednesday’s League Cup victory. Alli has been a regular under Mauricio Pochettino this season, although his form for Tottenham has been inconsistent.
Spurs will be favourites to pick up all three points at Huddersfield in his absence, but Barcelona will be a huge test next week. Alli has made 152 appearances in all competitions since joining from MK Dons in 2015.
Pochettino could turn to Moussa Sissoko in place of Alli, or he might opt for Harry Winks who featured in midweek against Watford.

Guardiola hopes to extend contract of Manchester City’s fan favourite

Guardiola hopes to extend contract of Manchester City’s fan favourite – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed he wants to extend the contract of Vincent Kompany past next summer.
The 32-year-old could depart the Etihad Stadium for nothing at the end of the season and has yet to engage in talks with the club over a new deal. Guardiola, however, has confirmed that he wants to keep Kompany regardless and hopes to tie him down.
“Yes, that is my wish. Ten years is a lot. It’s incredible. He played the Carabao Cup like it’s the final of the Champions League. That means a lot to me. If he plays five minutes then they are going to be the best five minutes in his life,” said the City boss.
“He is a good example for Phil Foden and the rest of our squad. Unfortunately, in the past it was the injuries, but I think in the last few months he’s feeling better.”
Kompany joined the Sky Blues from Hamburg in 2008 and has gone on to make 339 appearances in all competitions. The Belgian international has won three Premier League titles, three League Cups and one FA Cup. He’s been one of the league’s best defenders in his prime.
Injuries have hampered his progress in recent seasons and threatened to end his City career prematurely. However, Kompany has battled back to fitness and has become a key player for Guardiola.
He’s made five appearances in all competitions this season, operating alongside one of John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte. The centre-back isn’t getting any younger, but he remains just as important to City.

Injury boost for Liverpool ahead of Chelsea clash, Klopp favourite returns to the squad

Injury boost for Liverpool ahead of Chelsea clash, Klopp favourite returns to the squad – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has talked up the possibility of Virgil van Dijk returning to face Chelsea in Saturday’s Premier League clash. The 27-year-old has been sidelined all week with a rib injury but could play through pain at Stamford Bridge to help Liverpool get a result against their title rivals.
Klopp said: “Virgil will try everything to be ready and I know how it sounds but as long as you are not seriously injured, like broken or ruptured or a proper strain, then the boys play constantly with pain.
“And if you no pain before the game, then you will have it after the first challenge. That is how football is. It is important how you can deal with the pain and how strong is the pain, but if he is able to deal with it then he can play.”
Van Dijk has played in every league game so far for Liverpool and played a full 90 minutes in the Champions League as the Reds dispatched of Paris Saint-Germain. He’s drawn the plaudits from Klopp and will likely be called upon for such an important game, even if he’s not 100%.
The Dutch international has been a terrific servant in a short space of time for Liverpool, who signed from Southampton in January 2018, making 29 appearances in all competitions.
Liverpool are currently top of the table with 18 points from six games this season, boasting a 100% record after coming up against the likes of West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton.
Chelsea are third with only two points less than Klopp’s side, kept away from second placed Manchester City by goal difference. The Blues are a real threat to Liverpool on Saturday, not least because of home advantage and the face they won at Anfield in the League Cup days previously.

Tottenham nearing new deal for key midfielder, breakthrough made in negotiations

Tottenham nearing new deal for key midfielder, breakthrough made in negotiations – originally posted on Sportslens.com

According to the Independent, Tottenham Hotspur are nearing a new deal for Dele Alli after a breakthrough in negotiations was made. Both camps are reportedly confident of agreeing a contract extension that will see Alli stay at White Hart Lane past 2022.
The 22-year-old has been a terrific servant in his three years at Spurs and looks to have a bright future under Mauricio Pochettino. He joined the club from MK Dons in 2015 and has gone on to make 152 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 89 goals.
Alli has been a regular under Pochettino ever since he made the switch to Tottenham, but his form has dipped this campaign. After playing his part for England to reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the midfielder has been inconsistent at club level.
He’s not the only underperformer in the side, but Spurs will be desperate to get the best from Alli this season. Pochettino’s men have lost two of their last three league games and face a battle to stay in the top-four. Tottenham failed to strengthen their squad with one permanent signing in the summer, so it’s imperative they keen their best existing players.

Klopp opting for tempting decision against Chelsea could backfire spectacularly on Liverpool's campaign

Klopp opting for tempting decision against Chelsea could backfire spectacularly on Liverpool's campaign – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Liverpool face their toughest test of the new Premier League campaign when they visit Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea on Saturday.

The Reds are the only side to have won every of their six opening fixtures of the season, and getting a win against Maurizio Sarri’s men will go a long way as far as proving their title credentials goes.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp is faced with a huge decision to take, with star defender Virgil van Dijk not fully fit for the clash.

“With Virgil we have to wait. He hasn’t trained so far with the team but I can’t say any more about that”, the German revealed during Friday’s pre-match press conference, as reported by Liverpool Echo.

“Virgil is a world-class player, there’s no doubt about that. And if you miss a world class player, it’s always not cool. If Virgil is fit and can play, then he will play. But if not, then obviously we have options and that’s really good.

“We could play football before Virgil van Dijk and we can play football without Virgil van Dijk, thank God. But I prefer he is fit and available and I can make decisions over whether he needs a rest in one of the other games.”

While a decision on his involvement won’t be taken until Saturday morning, that the Dutch defender travelled with the rest of squad to west London hints at the possibility of him getting a taste of weekend’s action.

Van Dijk couldn’t train with others on Friday, with the bruised ribs he suffered against Southampton last weekend forcing him to work away from the rest of the squad.

However, the temptation to play him on Saturday is definitely high given his quality and the solidity he brings to the Liverpool defence.

Klopp would be taking a huge risk featuring Van Dijk as he is clearly not fully fit, and aggravating his injury won’t only set back his return to full fitness, it will also deal a massive blow on Liverpool’s campaign.

The £75million centre-back has arguably been one of the club’s best performers of the campaign, and while his presence will come as a very much welcome boost against Chelsea, there is no sense sacrificing his fitness for one game and eventually put him at the risk of missing many more.

Losing Van Dijk to a relapse will effectively deal a huge blow on Liverpool’s chances of mounting strong challenges across every competition this term, and it would be wise of Klopp not to risk the fitness of his key man against Chelsea.

It could end up becoming the difference between one defeat (or a draw) – the worst which could happen if he doesn’t feature at Stamford Bridge – and many defeats.
