Ian Wright in awe of what Pogba did against Chelsea

Manchester United tore Chelsea to shreds at Old Trafford on Sunday, handing the Blues a 4-0 defeat.
A brace from Marcus Rashford and goals from Anthony Martial and Daniel James did the job for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, and the Red Devils showed how much they have improved following quality defensive reinforcements over the summer.
New signings Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – who cost £80 million and £50 million respectively – were crucial to thwarting Chelsea’s efforts, with goalkeeper David De Gea putting last season’s woes behind him to put in an impressive shift.
Man. Utd weren’t the better team overall, but they took their chances and were more clinical in the final third.
Wantaway French midfielder Paul Pogba had a hand in the hosts’ last two goals despite putting in an underwhelming first-half display.
The World Cup winner clipped a ball over Blues star Cesar Azpilicueta, and a grateful Rashford took his chance to put United 3-nil up.
Pogba’s sublime assist was so good that Arsenal legend Ian Wright couldn’t help but react thus on Twitter:

Pogba pass 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 pic.twitter.com/8h86doI4dC

It remains to be seen if Pogba will remain at the Theater of Dreams beyond this summer, with the Real Madrid links refusing to go away.
Losing the Frenchman will be a huge blow for the Red Devils, though, as he is clearly capable of influencing games through a single moment of brilliance.
Solskjaer needs such a quality midfielder in his ranks, and it will be interesting to see if he can hold on to him before the summer transfer window across Europe finally shuts.

'Absolute legend', 'Class act' – Some Geordies react to what Benitez did before Arsenal game

'Absolute legend', 'Class act' – Some Geordies react to what Benitez did before Arsenal game – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Newcastle United kicked off their new Premier League campaign with a 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
Manager Steve Bruce’s side weren’t particularly poor and might have secured a draw had summer arrival Jetro Willems reacted faster during the build-up to the Gunners goal.
French winger Allan Saint-Maximin showed flashes of what he is capable of doing after coming on for his debut, and the former Nice man could prove crucial to Newcastle’s survival plans this season.
Brazilian striker Joelinton didn’t get the required services he would have hoped for in the opposition’s box, but his link-up play was great, and Bruce will hope he hits the ground running as soon as possible.
Erstwhile Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, currently with Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang, will definitely be keeping an eye on the Saint James’ Park outfit this term.
He sent this classy message to Bruce, the players and the fans just hours before the game against Arsenal:
“At the start of the Premier League season, I would like to wish Steve Bruce, all the players and the fans good luck.”
Here is how some Newcastle fans reacted to the Spaniard’s gesture on Twitter:

Best of luck in China Rafa. Thanks for all you did and tried to do. 👍

While a lot of fans are still mad at owner Mike Ashley for how he treated Benitez, and at Bruce for taking charge having once managed Sunderland, there was a commendable turn out as SJP against the Gunners.
Newcastle have a lot to prove this season, and it will be interesting to see how they fare after the changes that took place over the summer.

Report: Everton turned down chance to sign 34-goal forward earlier this summer

Report: Everton turned down chance to sign 34-goal forward earlier this summer – originally posted on Sportslens.com

According to Sportsmail, Everton turned down the chance to sign Lyon forward Memphis Depay earlier this summer.
The Netherlands international was offered to several clubs in England and Europe, including Everton, but the Goodison Park outfit were not interested in securing his services, opting not to enter into talks with the player’s representatives.
Manager Marco Silva was only keen on sealing a deal for Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha instead, but the Toffees were prised out of a move for the Ivory Coast international.
A summer transfer deadline day move for the Palace star fell through, prompting Everton to eventually make a late move for Nigerian forward Alex Iwobi.
The 23-year-old arrived from Arsenal for £35 million, and could make his debut against Watford this weekend.
It remains to be seen Iwobi will hit the ground running at Goodison Park, though, but Depay’s stats at Lyon suggest he might be a good addition to the Everton attack.
Despite scoring only seven goals in 53 games for Manchester United in 18 months at Old Trafford, the Dutchman has been a hit at France, scoring 34 goals in 88 league games since his arrival.
He definitely would have relished the chance of returning to the English top-flight and proving himself, but the fact that Toffees’ director of football Marcel Brands steered clear speaks volume.

Rangers picked up a 6-1 win over Hibernian at the weekend.
Jermain Defoe bagged an impressive hattrick for the Ibrox outfit and Steven Gerrard will be delighted with his team’s performance.
Rangers have started the season well and they will be looking to build on it.
They will want to challenge Celtic for the title this season and a good start will be vital.
Despite Defoe’s goalscoring exploits against Hibs, Ryan Jack managed to impress the most with his performance.
The 27-year-old Rangers midfielder is in very good form and he was arguably the best player on the pitch.
The fans seemed delighted with his display and it will be interesting to see if he can continue to perform at this level in the coming weeks.
Jack is a key player for Rangers right now and Gerrard will need him in top form to challenge for the top honours.
Some of the Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the player and his performance at the weekend. Here are the reactions from earlier.

Celtic interested in signing 22-yr-old from Championship outfit this summer

Celtic interested in signing 22-yr-old from Championship outfit this summer – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Celtic are looking to bring in a new left-back before the window closes and Max Lowe remains a target.
According to Daily Record, the Derby County defender could replace Kieran Tierney at Celtic this summer.
The Scottish defender joined Arsenal earlier this month and Celtic will have to replace him properly.
They have signed Boli earlier in the summer but the young left-back hasn’t impressed so far. He will need more time to adapt to the new league.
Lowe has played in the Scottish league before with Aberdeen and he was quite impressive for them. He will be able to make an immediate impact.
It will be interesting to see if Celtic make their move for the 22-year-old defender in the coming days.
Celtic banked £25m from Tierney’s sale and they have the money to sign Lowe this summer. He is not a key player for Derby and the Championship side might sell him for a reasonable offer.
The Hoops are considering a move for Greg Taylor as well and the report from Record adds that Taylor would be a cheap option that Lowe.
It will be interesting to see who the Scottish champions end up signing eventually.

Newcastle crashed to a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal at the weekend.
Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game for the Gunners.
Although the away side were firm favourites heading into the game, Newcastle were expected to do better in their opening game.
Steve Bruce’s men lacked organisation and desire. The fans won’t be too pleased with the performance.
It will be interesting to see how Newcastle United bounce back from this result. They will be expected to react with a positive result in their next game.
Newcastle had the quality to trouble Arsenal but they struggled to get going.
Steve Bruce will have to get more out of his players going forward.
Meanwhile, the fans weren’t too impressed with Javier Manquillo’s performance against Arsenal. The 25-year-old Spaniard had his fair share of criticism last season as well and things haven’t gone according to plan for him so far.
It will be interesting to see if he can turn around his form in the coming weeks.
Some of the Newcastle fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the player and here are some of the reactions.

Decent enough start from #NUFC All the lads doing ok.
Sit down Manquillo…I’m not talking about you!

Ex-Leeds player Bielsa deemed surplus to requirements set to join Liverpool

Ex-Leeds player Bielsa deemed surplus to requirements set to join Liverpool – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is set to miss action for the next few weeks after he picked up a calf injury against Norwich City on Friday night.
The Reds only have Adrian as their back-up and are now looking to bring in former Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan to Anfield on a short-term basis.
The 35-year-old was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season and has been part of Liverpool’s squad during pre-season, joining the side on their pre-season tour of America to provide back-up due to a shortage of goalkeepers.
Lonergan has since continued training at Melwood, and is set to sign a short-term contract with the club.
The Englishman had two stints with Leeds, spending the 2011-12 and 2017-18 campaigns at Elland Road where he made 45 appearances across all competitions.
Lonergan joined League One side Rochdale in February on an emergency loan and will now look to provide much-needed cover and competition for Adrian.
The ex-Whites goalie was deemed surplus to requirements by manager Marcelo Bielsa upon his arrival last summer, leaving Leeds by mutual consent.
The veteran has definitely done enough to convince Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp of his quality, and it will be interesting to see if he will make any first-team appearances going forward.
Since Lonergan’s departure, the Whites haven’t been short of quality options in the goalkeeping department, though, with Kiko Casilla coming in from Real Madrid in January, while French goalkeeper Illan Meslier recently arrived on a season-long loan from Lorient.

'So influential' – Popular pundit in awe of 27-yr-old, credits him for Tottenham's win

'So influential' – Popular pundit in awe of 27-yr-old, credits him for Tottenham's win – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Tottenham did well to come back from 1-0 down to win 3-1 against Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend.
Goals from Ndombele and Harry Kane helped the Londoners pick up all three points at home.
Popular pundit Jamie Redknapp has now lavished praise on Christian Eriksen for his performance after coming on in the second half.
The 27-year-old Danish midfielder changed the game when he came on. He added creativity and composure to the Spurs attack.
Before his arrival, Spurs were moving around the ball aimlessly and they were struggling to make the most out of their possession.
Redknapp has claimed that Spurs must look at the game against Aston Villa and realise how important Eriksen is to the side. He also urged the Londoners to pay the extra money for him and keep him at the club beyond this summer.
“[The comeback] was more to do with him than anyone else… He showed his importance to that team today,” he said on Sky Sports (via HITC). “Players like that are few and far between. They’ve got to keep him. If he wants a bit more money, that’s what great players deserve.
“When Eriksen plays it’s like the game stands still. They see the game different, they see the game in slow motion. He was so influential in that result today; it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for him.”
The midfielder has been linked with a move away and he will be out of contract next summer.
Spurs must do everything in their power to convince him to sign a new deal. Losing a player of his calibre would be quite a blow for Pochettino’s side.

Marco Silva admits 15-cap int'l could play a big role for Everton

Marco Silva admits 15-cap int'l could play a big role for Everton – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Everton lost a hugely influential player in Idrissa Gueye this summer as he joined French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Toffees signed Jean-Philippe Gbamin as a replacement for the 29-year-old midfielder and Marco Silva has high hopes of him.
The Everton boss has said that he can change the formation and system to negate the loss of Gueye but instead he is pinning his hopes on Morgan Schenierdlin to do the job for him.
“In my model, we have two players to play in that role – Morgan and J-P,” Silva told the Liverpool Echo.
“Of course, I can play differently but for Gana’s role we are talking about these two players and you are talking about a player who went to Paris Saint Germain.
“If I worked with him and helped him to have a very good season then now is the moment to work with the others and give them the conditions to perform. We lost two key players but now is the moment to look at what we have inside.”
The 15-times capped France international joined the Toffees in 2017 from Manchester United, but he never really replicated the kind of performances he showed during his time at Southampton.
The Frenchman didn’t have a great 2018/19 campaign, but he can turn it around this time. He has the quality and experience and with added responsibility, Silva can bring out the best in him this term.
Schenierdlin has loads of Premier League experience and there is no reason to believe why he cannot fill the hole left by Gueye.
Everton started their 2019/20 campaign with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday at Selhurst Park.

Report confirms Celtic scouted Lennon's 21-yr-old target at the weekend

Report confirms Celtic scouted Lennon's 21-yr-old target at the weekend – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Celtic will be looking to bring in a replacement for Kieran Tierney before the window closes.
According to Daily Record, Neil Lennon is eyeing up a move for Kilmarnock’s Greg Taylor.
Apparently, the Hoops scouted the 21-year-old target at the weekend and they could make a move for him soon.
Celtic raked in £25m from Tierney’s sale and they are expected to improve the squad significantly now. It will be interesting to see if the hierarchy manages to deliver.
The fans will be expecting signings all across the pitch and Lennon must look to get a few players in.
Simply buying a left-back won’t be enough. Celtic must use the Tierney money to improve their attack and midfield as well.
Taylor is a talented young left-back and he should prove to be a good addition to Lennon’s side. Currently, Celtic have Boli as their first choice left-back but the summer signing has struggled to adapt to Scottish football so far.
It won’t be hard to convince him to leave Kilmarnock for Celtic. The Hoops must look to convince his club first.
It will be interesting to see if they manage to get the deal over the line before the window closes.
