Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was delighted with the performance of Callum McGregor against Hibernian, praising the midfielder for his tactical brilliance, reports The Sun. McGregor played a full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Neil Lennon’s men and was utilised in three different positions, according to Rodgers.
The Hoops boss said on McGregor after the match: “He’s absolutely tactically brilliant. He played three positions today. He keeps the speed of the game going for us.” The 25-year-old has played in every Scottish Premiership game for Celtic this season, scoring and creating two goals for his troubles.
McGregor made the rise from the youth side to the Celtic first-team in 2013 and has gone on to make 186 appearances in all competitions, contributing 66 goals. The Scotland international, who has represented his country on seven occasions, is a key player under Rodgers and has hardly missed a game since the manager’s arrival.
Celtic’s win over Hibernian saw them go second in the Premiership table with 19 points from nine games, three points adrift of leaders Hearts. The Hoops have won three consecutive league outings and have suffered just one defeat in seven.
Hibs were coming off the back of four wins – back-to-back victories away from home – before their trip to Parkhead, so Celtic’s victory didn’t come easy. McGregor played his part in the big win and Rodgers gave him the praise he deserved for doing so.

Mike McGrath names which ‘world-class player’ is courted by Tottenham and Manchester City

Mike McGrath names which ‘world-class player’ is courted by Tottenham and Manchester City – originally posted on Sportslens.com

According to Mike McGrath of The Sun, Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake is a target for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. The 23-year-old is being linked with a £40m move away from Dean Court after his high level of performances early into the new season.
Tottenham have Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez as options at centre-back, but with Vertonghen and Alderweireld out of contract next summer and yet to put pen to paper on an extension, there’s real fear that Spurs could lose two big-name players from their defence.
Ake has big potential and is a versatile homegrown defender who is regarded as a ‘world-class player’ by McGrath. Bournemouth are understandably adamant on keeping him, however. The Netherlands international, who has made nine appearances for his country, has flourished with regular first-team football.
For years he floundered at Chelsea, enduring loan move after loan move to the likes of Reading, Watford and Bournemouth, before the Cherries made the deal permanent six months later. The former Feyenoord youth player has made a total of 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating nine goals.
Manchester City have Vincent Kompany, Aymeric Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones as centre-back options, but Kompany is in the final year of his deal, while Otamendi turns 31 later this season. Manager Pep Guardiola is also short on left-back options, so Ake could be useful in a utility capacity.

Gerrard drops exciting Rangers January transfer hint

Gerrard drops exciting Rangers January transfer hint – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has hinted that the Ibrox club could be looking to add a few players in the January transfer window.
Gerrard has made a strong impact at the Gers since taking charge of the club in the summer. He has not only made a wholesome change to the squad by bringing in players of his choice, but the results on the pitch have improved as well.
While the Ibrox club have exceeded all expectations in their Europa League campaign this season, Rangers have kept themselves in touching distance of their rivals in the Scottish Premiership title race as well.
Although Gerrard has assembled a very good squad, there are a few areas he could look to bolster in the January transfer window.
Recently, he watched the England Under-21 side in action against their Scotland counterparts in midweek. The Young Lions won the match 2-0, and the Rangers boss has suggested that he was scouting a few players (without mentioning names) he would like to bring to Ibrox in the January transfer window.
Gerrard told The Daily Record when asked if he was at the game to scout players: “Possibly, I’m not going to lie to you. I went to the game because it’s a juicy fixture, England-Scotland always is.
“Two of my players were playing for Scotland as well obviously, Ross McCrorie and Glenn Middleton, who I wanted to watch closely. But I wanted to have a look at what was about.
“A lot of players on show are at clubs but maybe not satisfied with the amount of games they’re playing,
“So I’m not going to sit here and lie and say I wasn’t there to see the talent. I thought it was an interesting game and the best team won on the night.”
Gerrard’s comments suggest that he is looking to bolster the squad in January, and it should excite the Rangers fans. There are a number of good and promising young players in that team, and it remains to be seen whether Gerrard approaches any one of them.
Rangers won 4-1 against Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership clash on Sunday.

Davie Provan names which Celtic player is “hugely overrated” and has “not enough discipline”

Davie Provan names which Celtic player is “hugely overrated” and has “not enough discipline” – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Davie Provan believes Scott Brown is “hugely overrated” and has “not enough discipline” for Celtic. The long-serving midfielder has an uncertain future at Parkhead with his contract expiring next summer and interest from Australian A-League side Western Melbourne has Brown considering a move away from Celtic.
A switch to Australia would be a surprise, but the 33-year-old is reaching the final few years of his career and may want to sample life abroad before hanging up his boots. Brown recently revealed he’s been in talks with Celtic over a new deal which may include a coaching role when he’s finished as a player, but Provan wouldn’t be against him leaving for Melbourne.
Writing in his column for The Sun, he said: “I’ve never bought into the Scott Brown hype. Hugely overrated if you ask me. Too many square passes, not enough goals or discipline. But you don’t play the number of games he has for Celtic and Scotland unless you have something about you.
“Given what he’s shown over 11 years at Celtic, he’ll deservedly take his place in the pantheon of the club’s outstanding players. Currently linked with a move to Australia, he’s earned the right to wind down any way he wants.”
Brown has made 484 appearances in all competitions for Celtic since his move from Hibernian in 2007. The Scotland international, who has represented his country on 55 occasions, has won eight Premiership titles, five League Cups and four Scottish Cups with Celtic.
He’s no slouch and has been an incredible servant for the Hoops in the last eleven years. Brown certainly wouldn’t be begrudged a move to Melbourne, but he may find it difficult to leave Celtic after all this time.

Report: La Liga giants set sight on £60k-per-week 2014 Tottenham signing

Report: La Liga giants set sight on £60k-per-week 2014 Tottenham signing – originally posted on Sportslens.com

According to reports from TEAMtalk, reigning La Liga champions Barcelona are planning to keep a close eye on Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier’s form for the rest of the season.
Dier impressed during England’s recent Nations League win over Spain during the international break. It was a brilliant performance from the midfielder, who joined Spurs in 2014.
During the game Dier produced a strong challenge against Sergio Ramos. Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce suggested on TalkSPORT that Dier is as good as Sergio Busquets. His comment drew a lot of ridicule, but it seems Barcelona have taken a keen note of his performance.
Barcelona are also interested in Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld. However, the report suggests that the La Liga giants feel that Dier needs to be observed closely for his versatility.
The Catalan giants are likely to watch him closely in the next few months and they .could weigh up a move for the 24-year-old at the end of the season.
Dier, who is on £60,000-a-week at Spurs, may not be a high profile player at the north London club, but he is a key player for Mauricio Pochettino.
He is a solid defensive midfielder, but has the ability to play as a centre-back as well. It will require a massive offer from Barcelona to prise him away from north London.

Gary Lineker reacts to Everton win, picks one player for praise

Gary Lineker reacts to Everton win, picks one player for praise – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Former great England striker and now a popular football pundit, Gary Lineker has praised Jordan Pickford after he saved a penalty for Everton during their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.
Everton were clearly the dominant side of the two. However, they were left frustrated by a resilient Crystal Palace side. In the end, two quick goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun sealed the tie in the Toffees’ favour.
Pickford, who was one of England’s best performers during the World Cup, saved a penalty from Luka Milivojevic in the second half. It was a crucial save, one that kept Everton in the game.

Not the best penalty but brilliant from Pickford. 👏

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 21, 2018

It was a brave move from Marco Silva in the end that paid dividends. Everton enjoyed 60% of possession and had 20 shots during the game but they were struggling to find the breakthrough.
He changed the formation to 4-2-4, made big calls, and luck favoured them on this occasion. With this victory, Everton have moved to eighth in the Premier League table.

Jan Molby names which two Liverpool players have a “wonderful opportunity” for playing time

Jan Molby names which two Liverpool players have a “wonderful opportunity” for playing time – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Jan Molby believes Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri have a “wonderful opportunity” for playing time in the Liverpool side due to the injury crisis Jurgen Klopp has, reports the Daily Star.
Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita all returned from the international break with injury problems, and only van Dijk and Salah featured against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Shaqiri started in midfield alongside Jordan Henderson and James Milner, while Adam Lallana was in a more advanced role with Salah and Daniel Sturridge.
Roberto Firmino was on the bench against Huddersfield and will be breathing down Lallana’s neck for a starting place in the coming weeks. Keita will also want Shaqiri’s spot in the midfield when he returns to full fitness, but Molby believes Shaqiri and Lallana should take the chance they have with both hands.
He said: “The next few weeks should represent a wonderful opportunity for Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana at Liverpool. They’ll have been waiting for a chance to show Jurgen Klopp they can step up, and the Reds’ injury list means this is the time to prove they can do it.”
Shaqiri joined Liverpool from Stoke City earlier in the summer and has gone on to make seven appearances across the board, making two assists. The 27-year-old knew he’d struggle for playing time given the stiff competition for a starting place, but he could give Klopp a selection headache with his performances.
As for Lallana, the 30-year-old has made 142 appearances since his 2014 move from Southampton to Liverpool, scoring and creating 41 goals. He’s a talented midfielder who has struggled for games due to injury problems. If Lallana can get a run of games in the side, he will also give his manager plenty to consider.

'Exemplary': Alan Shearer picks out one Spurs player for lavish praise after his latest display

'Exemplary': Alan Shearer picks out one Spurs player for lavish praise after his latest display – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Former Newcastle United striker and popular football pundit Alan Shearer has showered praise on Tottenham Hotspur winger Lamela after yet another fine performance from the Argentine.
The 26-year-old joined Spurs in 2013, and has made over 150 appearances for the north London club. He is a player of vast potential, but somehow hasn’t been able to deliver it on a consistent basis.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has used him wisely after he returned from a long injury lay off. And Lamela is repaying his faith with some fantastic performances this season.
Lamela has impressed so far while coming off the bench. On this occasion, Pochettino gave him his first start of the season, and it was his goal that made the difference between the two sides on Saturday afternoon.
The Argentine has taken his goal tally to four in all competitions. He has also registered two assists for the side.
Match of the Day pundit Shearer was impressed with Lamela’s performance, and observed that he is playing with confidence again.
“Impressive. Lamela on his first league start of the season was the difference, particularly in the first half,” said Shearer, as quoted by Football London.
“He produced some wonderful bits of skill, his first touch was exemplary, bringing people into the game and everything that was good about Tottenham on the ball he seemed to be at the heart of that.
“Confidence, skill, belief on the ball, one v one, trickery, he had all of it.
“He was full of confidence, full of belief, did his bit defensively as well, when Tottenham lost the ball, didn’t give up, got it back and Tottenham are then on the break again.”
