Liverpool boost with Chelsea dealt massive injury blow ahead of League Cup clash

Liverpool boost with Chelsea dealt massive injury blow ahead of League Cup clash – originally posted on

Chelsea visit Anfield on Wednesday to face Liverpool in the third round of the League Cup, and with Saturday’s league game between the two at Stamford Bridge of more importance and priority, both sides are expected to ring the changes to their lineups.
The Blues have been dealt a huge blow, with midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek set to miss the Carabao Cup clash, according to The Telegraph.
The England international is currently down the pecking order in Maurizio Sarri’s plans, and was hoping to use the cup games to convince the new boss, with the midweek clash seen as a huge opportunity to impress.
However, Loftus-Cheek’s has been ruled out of the Liverpool showdown having missed weekend’s clash with West Ham United, and his absence sure hands Jurgen Klopp’s side a massive boost.
The Anfield outfit will most likely also field a weaker side, and having the English midfielder out of action is a huge relief given his quality and hunger. The youngster impressed on loan last season at Crystal Palace, earning a place in Three Lions’ World Cup squad as a result.
Liverpool have won every of their seven games played across all competitions this season, and will hope to maintain the impressive run in front of their ever-supportive home fans on Wednesday night.
With Loftus-Cheek ruled out for Chelsea, that’s one less player to worry about for Klopp and his men, but a fierce clash remains anticipated regardless of who misses out or not given the depth in quality of both sides.

Luka Modric Wins The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award

Luka Modric Wins The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award – originally posted on

Luka Modric, the Croatian captain and Real Madrid midfielder, will no longer be associated with phrases like “Unsung hero” or “Underrated.” He is the recently crowned ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Player’ of 2017-18. Since 2007, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have had the duopoly over the prestigious FIFA award. But it was a matter of time till someone else stole the show. And who better to do it than Modric, that too in an exceptional season even for his high standards.
Luka Modric had 29% of the votes that awarded him the best male player award. He had a landslide victory over the other contenders such as Ronaldo (19%), Salah (11.2%), Mbappe (10%) and Messi (9%). He is the first Croatian player to win this award. Modric was a force to reckon with this season, as he guided his national side to the FIFA World Cup 2018 final, followed by his important performance in the UEFA Champions League, leading Real Madrid to their 13th (and Modric’s third consecutive) UCL title. He has scored two goals in the world cup and an important assist against Russia in the quarter-final.
Luka Modric, the 33-year old midfielder reacted to his historic win of ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Player’ award, “This award is not just mine. It is my teammates’ from Real Madrid and Croatia. Without my coaches, I would not have won this and without my family, I would not be the player I am today.” His Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale congratulated him on Twitter. “Congratulations my friend! An unbelievable player and an unbelievable season @lukamodric10“, he tweeted last night.

Former Arsenal star wades into Premier League sponsorship debate

Former Arsenal star wades into Premier League sponsorship debate – originally posted on

The debate over whether there should be stricter controls over which types of companies can sponsor Premier League clubs has showed no signs of slowing down over the past few days.
Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson has previously pledged that a future Labour government would ban gambling companies from sponsoring top flight teams.
Watson and shadow health and social care secretary, Jon Ashworth, have spent a year reviewing the party’s position on gambling and have promised to ban betting companies from sponsoring football shirts if their party is elected.
Former Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams has backed their stance, telling Radio 4’s Today programme that he believes betting sponsorship should be barred.
However, it is debatable whether such a sweeping measure is necessary.
As highlighted by this survey, Premier League clubs want to understand which types of companies to partner with in order to promote goods and services their fans want.
Sponsorship has traditionally fallen into four main areas of business. Back in the 1990s, the growth in the technology industry led to big consumer electronics companies dominating football sponsorship.
Financial firms and alcohol brands have also made significant investments into the Premier League, but in recent years there has been a big increase in the number of gambling companies sponsoring football.
Shirt sponsorship in the Premier League featuring betting brands is estimated to be worth about £50 million this season.
Critics claim that the presence of gambling companies in football helps to fuel an increase in the number of people who are addicted to betting.
However, a recent Gambling Commission report produced from field research carried out in 2016 showed that the rate of problem gambling across Britain was just 0.7% of the population.
While a decrease in that figure would obviously be welcome, the rise in the number of gambling companies sponsoring Premier League clubs has not added to the issue.
Assuming the Conservatives stay in power, it is expected that the relationship between gambling companies and football will continue to grow in the future.
Football is now the major source of sports betting, accounting for more than 70% of all wagers placed. That level of interest highlights that the practice has widespread appeal.
Gambling is a great form of entertainment, and the majority of people are able to enjoy this in a controlled and responsible manner.
It is also important to remember that the gambling industry creates opportunities for society through hiring of employees and contracting with businesses.
Providing the number of problem gamblers in Britain remains stable or reduces in the future, there appears to be no valid reason to implement a wholesale ban on betting companies sponsoring Premier League clubs.
Complete this survey about Premier League sponsorship for the chance to win £50. Just click the link, answer some simple questions, tweet the post and you’ll be entered into the draw.

Manager makes a prediction about Celtic this season, fans will be delighted

Manager makes a prediction about Celtic this season, fans will be delighted – originally posted on

Hibernian manager Neil Lennon has made a prediction about Celtic this season.
He believes that the Hoops are likely to win the Scottish Premiership despite their poor start to the season.
Lennon claims that the league will be a lot more competitive this year because of Rangers’ investment but Celtic will be hard to stop once they hit top form.
The Hibernian manager believes that Celtic are just going through a rough patch and this is just a blip.
He said: “Once they hit the ground running Celtic are going to be hard team to stop. I still say they are clear favourites for the title. With the investment Rangers have put into their squad and the improvement of other clubs it was always likely to be far more competitive this year than it has been for quite a while. I still think Celtic will win the league. They have the strength in depth and the quality of player. Just like everybody else, they are going through a little bit of a blip.”
Celtic fans will be hoping for Lennon’s prediction to come true. Winning the league after a start like this would be a superb achievement.
The Scottish giants are currently sixth in the league table and they have crashed out of the Champions League as well. Celtic crashed to a 2-1 league defeat against Kilmarnock on Sunday and that has attracted a lot of criticism from the fans and the media.
The Hoops are the best team in Scotland without a doubt and Lennon’s prediction is hardly surprising. It will be interesting to see how quickly Rodgers can get his team believing and performing at the top level once again.

Phil Neville reckons Everton addressing long-standing problem in January could save Silva's job

Phil Neville reckons Everton addressing long-standing problem in January could save Silva's job – originally posted on

Everton have had a stuttering start to the new Premier League campaign despite the changes made to the squad during the summer transfer window.
The Toffees have won just once, drawn thrice and lost twice, and their lack of quality finishing in the final third remains worrying.
Everton have managed to score just eight league goals so far, and the club’s one-time skipper Phil Neville believes adding a new striker to the squad in January could go a long way in guaranteeing manager Marco Silva his job in the long-term.
“I don’t think Silva should be worried about his future, but a good striker can mean a manager keeps his job,” Neville told BBC Sport.
“I am sure his predecessors at the club – Ronald Koeman, David Unsworth and Sam Allardyce – would agree, and it is imperative Everton address the problem in the January transfer window.”
Everton currently have the trio of Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse as their primary striking options, but only the England youth international has managed to find the back of the net this season, and landing a quality hitman capable of delivering on a consistent basis is pertinent if their top-six dreams are to come true anytime soon.
The Goodison Park outfit failed in their pursuit of Olivier Giroud in the summer, with the former Arsenal striker choosing Chelsea instead.
While Tosun and co. could still impress going forward, it remains to be seen if they have the quality and experience it takes to lead the line for a club with such lofty ambitions, and heeding Neville’s advice in the January transfer window – bringing in a proven goalscorer – would be a very wise thing to do.

Kilmarnock player lays into Celtic star after his side's 2-1 win on Sunday

Kilmarnock player lays into Celtic star after his side's 2-1 win on Sunday – originally posted on

Celtic crashed to a 2-1 defeat against Kilmarnock over the weekend.
Goals from Chris Burke and Stuart Findlay ensured a win for the home side.
Celtic did well to get their noses in front but the hosts scored twice in the second half to secure the three points. Leigh Griffiths had put the visitors ahead in the first half.
The Scottish champions failed to impress with their performance and Kris Boyd has now singled out Scott Sinclair’s display on Sunday.
The Kilmarnock player believes that Sinclair went into hiding when his side needed him to step up and deliver.
He said: “Scott Sinclair looked a pale shadow of the player he was, it was actually pretty sad to see. No confidence, didn’t want to take anybody on. When you’re confident you look to get on the ball, he was the opposite. He was hiding behind defenders and didn’t want it. These are the guys, when you’re performing at a high level, you need them to stand up. Scott Sinclair has played in the English Premier League, he’s a big player for Celtic. He isn’t anywhere near where he needs to be.”
It is true that Celtic were in need of some inspiration and the 28-year-old failed to make an impact. The Celtic winger needs to take more responsibility and perform better.
Celtic have made a very poor start to the season and it will be interesting to see whether Rodgers can figure out a way to improve.

BBC pundit raves about 'outstanding' West Ham star after his display vs Chelsea

BBC pundit raves about 'outstanding' West Ham star after his display vs Chelsea – originally posted on

West Ham defender Issa Diop produced an assured display at the back for his side on Sunday and he has made into Garth Crooks’ team of the week.
The Hammers battled out a 0-0 draw against Chelsea and Diop was excellent in dealing with the likes of Hazard and Giroud.
BBC pundit Garth Crooks has heaped praise on the young defender for his performance.
He said: “He was outstanding against Everton last week and was unlucky not to make my TOTW then. However, another outstanding performance by Issa Diop and a clean sheet – against Chelsea of all teams, having been battered in the opening exchanges – has not gone unnoticed.”
The 21-year-old seems to be adjusting well to the Premier League and the fans can expect more commanding displays at the back in future.
Pellegrini spent 25 million pounds on the young defender this summer and his quality is there for everyone to see. Judging by his displays against Everton and Chelsea, Diop certainly has the ability to justify his fee this season and prove himself as a bargain in the long run.
West Ham have improved defensively in their last couple of outings and Diop has been excellent in both. The fans will be hoping for more of the same as the season progresses.

'Fantastic', 'Love this' – Some Aston Villa fans react to club's latest announcement

'Fantastic', 'Love this' – Some Aston Villa fans react to club's latest announcement – originally posted on

Midfielder Jack Grealish has signed a new long-term deal with Aston Villa.
The Championship club have announced the agreement on their official website.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a five-year contract and it will keep him at Villa Park until 2023.
It has been quite a turnaround as far as Grealish’s future at the club is concerned. The midfielder was expected to leave the club in the summer because of Villa’s financial problems.
However, the new investors balanced the books and decided to keep him at the club. The player has now committed his future to the club for another five years.
The fans will be delighted to see that a key player has chosen to extend his deal at the club.
Grealish was crucial to Aston Villa’s promotion push last season and they will be looking to do the same this year.
The 23-year-old has been with his boyhood club since eight-years-old and he will be looking to secure promotion with them next summer.
Christian Purslow, the CEO, said: “Securing the long-term future of Jack, a player we believe will play a pivotal role in leading Aston Villa back to where it belongs, is fantastic news for everybody associated with our football club. He is a tremendous talent who has been with us since he was a child and naturally we are delighted that he has now committed the next five years of his career to Aston Villa.”
Here is how the Aston Villa fans have reacted to the club’s announcement.

Levy dithered…23-year-old could be out of reach now despite Spurs interest

Levy dithered…23-year-old could be out of reach now despite Spurs interest – originally posted on

Jack Grealish has signed a new five-year contract at Aston Villa today, the club have confirmed on their official website.
The 23-year-old is arguably one of the best attacking midfielders in the Championship and Villa have done well to persuade him to sign to a new contract after a turbulent summer where he was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs were heavily interested in signing Grealish from Villa, but they didn’t match the club’s valuation on the player.
The north London club eventually failed to sign a single player in the summer transfer window. Daniel Levy dithered to meet Villa’s asking price, and now Spurs may not get another opportunity to sign the player.
The long-term contracts allow the club to demand a high transfer fee for the player. Spurs used the same ploy with Gareth Bale. Liverpool used the same tactics with Luis Suarez.
The question is will Spurs come for Grealish again next summer if Villa slap a huge £60 million price tag on his shoulders? Probably not.
According to reports from the Sunday Express, Spurs remain keen on signing Grealish. However, Villa are looking to insert a huge £60million release clause in his contract.
Whether or not there’s a release clause inserted, it has certainly put Villa in a strong position at the negotiation table for Grealish.
Spurs missed the chance to sign Grealish this summer, and after his latest deal, he could be out of reach for them in the next transfer window as well.

'Absolute beast' – Some West Ham fans can't stop raving about £25m star's display

'Absolute beast' – Some West Ham fans can't stop raving about £25m star's display – originally posted on

West Ham battled out an impressive draw against Chelsea on Sunday.
The Hammers could have won the game in the end but Andriy Yarmolenko missed a sitter from close range.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men seem to have turned a corner after their poor start to the season. The Londoners have picked up four points from their last two league games and they will be looking to build on this going forward.
One player who has impressed a lot is the new summer signing Issa Diop. The young center-back did brilliantly to deal with Hazard and Giroud yesterday.
Diop is still adjusting to the new club and the league and these performances are very encouraging. The West Ham fans will be hoping for more of the same in the upcoming games.
West Ham need to improve defensively if they want to finish in the top half and if Diop keeps performing at this level, they will certainly do a lot better at the back.
Here is how the West Ham fans reacted to their new signing’s performance against Chelsea.

Issa Diop is an absolute beast by the way…showing exactly why we paid £25m for him. Massive future ⚒
— Wᴇsᴛ Hᴀᴍ Sᴏᴄɪᴀʟ (@WestHamSocial) September 23, 2018

Issa Diop vs Chelsea
2 blocks (more than any player on the pitch)
94.7% passing accuracy (higher than any WHU player)
— Ironwork Tours (@IronworkTours) September 24, 2018

If you dont believe Issa Diop is worth just over £120 million, I have all night to argue with you.
— J.O’B (@chanceig) September 23, 2018

Really good result in the end. It was important to get something on the board at home and the players defended superbly. Issa Diop could prove to be a great signing – he looks like he has it all #WHUCHE #COYI
— James Murray (@James_Murray93) September 23, 2018

Issa Diop and Declan Rice we’re both superb. 19 and 21 years old #WHUCHE
— Connor Archie Bird (@ConnorBirdd) September 23, 2018

Diop solid, Balbuena has me nervous at times but I think give it time and they’ll be a solid pairing
— James pearce (@JamesP98WHU) September 23, 2018

Diop is class and will only improve. Balbuena gets me nervous at times but once Reid is back will be a brilliant sub
— gekyume (@_liltrick) September 23, 2018

Issa diop proves himself again
